The Annacis Island Campus is BCIT’s newest location, and opened to students in September 2014. The 142,000-square-foot facility is home to motive power programs offered by BCIT and Vancouver Community College. These programs train heavy-duty mechanics, transport trailer mechanics, diesel mechanics, commercial transportation mechanics, railway conductors and forklift operators.

Clients were looking for solutions to ensure the safety of their students and staff when offloading equipment onto elevated loading bays.

UBC Services Building, Canopy

This 125,000 sf two-story building is the home of various of departments and units in the UBC campus, which include building operation, project service, capital planning & strategic project development, parking and access control service, child care service, campus mail, , financial service, risk management service, VP of human resource etc. It is also the center of teaching, learning and technology, as well as the digital media technologies.

The system is a rigid rail attached to the structure steel roof of the canopy, to facilitate maintenance operations on top of the UBC fleet trucks. It was designed for 2 person working simultaneously, and to accommodate an existing gantry crane to become a complete system.

Milk Tanker Truck Facility

201 Vernon Street, Enderby, BC

This 13,000 sf 2-storeys building is a home of a new 4-bay washing facility for milk transportation trucks in Enderby, BC. Up to 49 staff will be working in the facility.

Enderby is just one of the many towns in the Kamloops-Okanagan Region where dairy production remains one of the most important businesses for local economy. The milk produced at the farm is bought by the B.C. Milk Board and processed in the Lower Mainland and distributed around the province. About 85% of milk produced by the 96 dairy farms in the region goes out of the area while rest stays here with small processors.

Atlas worked closely with the structural engineer to design a custom horizontal life line that worked with the design of the building. The building manufacturer had to add structural reinforcing on the steel structure so the horizontal life line could be installed level and not follow the slope of the roof. The line was installed to allow the worker to safely navigate the top of the tanker trailer while performing his duties.

Main Street Skytrain Station

Main Street-Science World Station is the oldest station on Translink’s rapid transit system. The Station had long been recognized as a priority for upgrades. ATLAS has installed a multitude of pedestal and wall mounted anchorages in combination with horizontal lifelines to allow for workers to safely work and carry out these upgrades on the Station. Working with the general contractor and following Translink’s and ATLAS’ safety procedures, all the work was required to be done in the middle of the night when the trains are not running. Just another example of ATLAS’ ability to get the work done safely and properly, regardless of circumstance.

Caltrax

ATLAS designed an HLL system to service the top of railcars along the 231’ catwalk. Design included additional structural members to be added to the base structure in order to meet loading criteria of the fall protection system. The overhead horizontal lifeline system needed to be engineered to accommodate four simultaneous users.

Coast Mountain Bus Company

3855 Kitchener Street, Burnaby
Located at 3855 Kitchener Street in Burnaby, B.C., the Coast Mountain Bus Company Burnaby Transit Centre (BTC) has a fleet capacity of 238 buses (101 hybrid and 137 diesel vehicles).
The transit centre is home to the vehicle maintenance centre which provides fleet overhaul, paint and fabrication services for the entire conventional and articulated bus fleet. Signage, farebox and bus stop maintenance operations are also run out of the location. There are 10 bus bays available for repairs, maintenance and rebuilds and four paint booths. The fleet parts warehouse, fabrication and machine shop and inventory control functions are all co-located in the immediate vicinity

ATLAS installed and designed a Rigid Rail Monorail with a suspended life line system above the Coast Mountain Bus Bay for use with their Hybrid buses. Battery packs for the Hybrid buses are located on the roof of the bus and Translink required a system that would allow the worker to move freely and safely to disconnect the batteries whilst servicing the vehicle.

Marpole Transport

The Marpole Transport service center provides maintenance for it’s large fleet, which includes Super-B Flatbed Trains, 48-53′ Flat decks, 53′ Quads, Drop Decks, Curtain Side 45′ & 53′, Super-B Tautliners and Tankers.

ATLAS installed an overhead rigid rail attached to the underside of OWSJ to facilitate the safe tarping of loads on Tractor Trailers

ATLAS confirmed the structural integrity of the building through the review of available drawings and site assessments and worked with the client to install the system during non peak hours to avoid interfering with regular business operations

Gorman Bros Lumber

53 Dure Meadow Rd, Lumby, BC

Gorman Bros Lumber needed a way to protect their workers  while safely working on top of rail cars and trucks in their yard. ATLAS designed, engineered and installed  a system utilizing telephone poles,  with custom brackets designed by ATLAS installed on top of the poles allowing lifelines to be rigged.

The overhead system was used successfully for many years after which the client requested the system to be extended. Additional poles were added and new lifelines were installed allowing users to work safely from the overhead system over the extended span of track.
