MTU Maintenance Canada is the North American member of MTU Maintenance network of companies, the largest independent provider of commercial engine maintenance services worldwide, under MTU Aero Engines. With 400 highly skilled employees, the company operates a shop in the immediate vicinity of Vancouver’s International Airport where it repairs and overhauls engines and accessories and performs engine tests.

A 130,000-square-foot facility, complete with full test cell capacity, services military and commercial customers in V2500, CF6 and CFM56 engine programs. A full in-house accessories repair division complements both the in-house MRO activities as well as 3rd party MRO and LRU requirements for these and many other engine types, such as GE90.

Atlas conducted in-house reviews with end users and field measurements with MTU to ensure all of their requirements were met and enable Atlas to propose a custom system to cover all areas of concern.
An existing gantry crane was utilized to enable a point of tie-off wherever the crane was positioned along with anchors installed in strategic locations on the test cell itself.
The anchors enable the safe maintenance of the test cell and any maintenance operations that need to be carried out on the jet engines.
Special care had to be taken to avoid any drilling to avoid any waste or debris which would potentially damage the engines being tested.

UBC – Student Union Building

The University of British Columbia’s newest centrepiece at the Vancouver-Point Grey campus. Centred around an impressive, airy atrium with a bird’s nest-shaped space and lounge-like amenity hovering high over the expansive concourse spaces. Wood was used extensively throughout the building. Incorporating elements of the Living Building Challenge. The Building was conceived as a means of shaping flows through space – flows of peoples, of materials, ecologies, energies…and ideas.

Atlas was involved early in the design of this project, providing Pre-Engineering and Analysis support to this signature project’s design team. Close coordination between Atlas and the Architect and Structural engineering teams was critical to ensure a safe and functional system was provided while not compromising the aesthetic views of the large internal atriums known as “The Nest”.

During the construction portion of this project, it was important to follow the tight schedule and coordinate with other subtrades; including Glu-Lam, Glazing and Roofing contractors. After the successful completion of the supply and installation of this complicated project, Atlas provided training to the client and UCB on the systems function and maintenance.

Rogers Sugar

ATLAS has been working with Rogers Sugar for many years, providing safety solutions for a variety of applications within their compound. In every building, ATLAS has worked with the staff at Rogers to provide custom application safety solutions to keep workers safe. From overhead cable systems complete with self-retracting lifelines to horizontal lifelines on the Colby Cranes at the dock, ATLAS has been there.

BCIT School of transportation

The Annacis Island Campus is BCIT’s newest location, and opened to students in September 2014. The 142,000-square-foot facility is home to motive power programs offered by BCIT and Vancouver Community College. These programs train heavy-duty mechanics, transport trailer mechanics, diesel mechanics, commercial transportation mechanics, railway conductors and forklift operators.

Clients were looking for solutions to ensure the safety of their students and staff when offloading equipment onto elevated loading bays.

Fleetwood Christian Reformed Church

Current building on the 160th street was built in 2001. It serves 500 Surrey residents by Fleetwood CRC, the congregation started in 1961 by group of Dutch immigrants.

ATLAS supplied and installed an interior HLL system used for atrium hall application- lighting maintenance.

Fairmont Hotel Vancouver

Fairmont Hotel Vancouver is known as the ‘Castle in the City’ and reflects timeless luxury and history of Vancouver. Constructed at 111 metres (17 stories) high, it became part of the Canadian Pacific Hotels chain after that company purchased CN Hotels in 1988. CP Hotels was later purchased by Fairmont Hotels and Resorts, and this building is the third hotel to be named “Hotel Vancouver”.

Atlas developed and installed permanent equipment to meet OHS Regulations, in conjunction with Owner Representatives and contractors performing major renovations. This allows window washing, exterior building maintenance and seasonal lighting operations to occur.

Challenges included the discovery and adaption to deal with the various building materials and structure implemented over the building’s unique history of the past century. Continued installations occur as portions of building are changed, renovated and modernized.Applications:

The Bella Concert Hall, Mount Royal Gate SW Calgary

The Bella, a 773-seat concert hall, studio space and musical classroom at the Mount Royal Conservatory on the Mount Royal University campus in southwest Calgary is city’s newest jewel of a performing arts venue. The Bella’s has a unique western Canadian-tinted design translated into bricks and mortar. The Bella is a state of the art, medium-sized concert hall, featuring 43 soundproofed practice studios, an early childhood instructional suite, six ensemble rehearsal halls for choirs, chamber groups and orchestras, a percussion room, and master class rooms.

Atlas designed and installed an HLL and rigid rail for interior maintenance of the concert hall which allowed for the safe rigging of lighting and theater equipment. An exterior rigid rail and ladder for roof maintenance and single point anchors for Building Maintenance. Building complexities made for challenging locations for securing the HLL and rigid rail.

Worker safety and building aesthetics were both of importance to the owner. Atlas blended our equipment with their surroundings by using matching custom champagne and copper color powder coating of the rigid rail fall protection systems and ladder while maintaining the required tolerances for the trolleys.

Gordon and Leslie Diamond Health Care Center

The Gordon and Leslie Diamond Health Centre is an 11-story, 365,000-square-foot health care facility, with 600 underground parking stalls, at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH). It supports 600,000 patients annually, as well as several hundred medical students and medical professionals
