Richmond Olympic Oval, BC

The Richmond Olympic Oval  is an indoor multi-sports arena in the city of Richmond, BC. The oval was built for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics and was originally configured with a speed skating rink. Constructed utilizing pine-beetle-kill wood and achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.

ATLAS designed and installed a number of custom anchor applications for this project and was able to achieve all design and scope of work goals by employing a number of different cable systems. A combination of horizontal and vertical lifelines were utilized on the Richmond Olympic Oval.

Applications:

  1. Roof Top Maintenance (RTM)
  2. Scheduled Exterior Building Maintenance

Product:

  1. Fall Arrest and Restraint Anchors
  2. Horizontal Lifeline Systems (HLLs)
  3. Vertical Lifeline Systems (VLLs)

Translink SkyBridge, Surrey BC

Translink SkyBridge

Translink SkyBridge

Surrey, BC

The SkyBridge is a cable-stayed bridge in Metro Vancouver. Built between 1987 and 1989, it spans the Fraser River and connects New Westminster with Surrey, and carries only the Skytrain (no automobiles). The bridge has two 123-metre tall towers and carries trains 45 metres above the Fraser River and valley. The main span is 340 metres and the total length is 616 metres, making it the longest cable-supported transit-only bridge in the world.

The SkyBridge has two tracks to let the TransLink Skytrain to pass either way on the bridge. A third set of rails in the middle is used by maintenance crews to truck equipment back and forth on the bridge.

This is a retrofit project of which 2 custom A-Frame were installed inside the concrete tower and 2 spiral anchors to be attached to I beam over openings to lower level for Confined Spaces Rescue Equipment. The equipment is being installed in the Sky Train Bridge connecting New West to Surrey. Work was completed during revenue hours but care had to be taken when moving to different location while the system was in operation.

Applications:

  1. Unscheduled Exterior Building Maintenance

Products:

  1. Vertical Lifeline System (VLL)

Christ Church Cathedral – Vancouver, BC

Christ Church Cathedral, Vancouver

Christ Church Cathedral

690 Burrard Street, Vancouver

The Anglican cathedral is Vancouver’s oldest surviving church. It opened in 1889 and was used as a landmark for ships entering Vancouver harbour. Since 2004 there has been $12.5 million spent on the cathedral to renew and restore the fabric of the building. The steel and stained glass BELL TOWER, located on the northeast side of the Anglican cathedral, is the centerpiece of a $7.5-million renovation to the historic building at Georgia and Burrard.

Atlas worked with the designers and fabricators of the BELL TOWER, to design and install a Permanent Fall Protection System combining Atlas Single Point Spiral anchors along with a (Pre-Manufacturered) Flexible Cable Ladder Safety System to protect workers climbing the BELL TOWER ladder and working within.

Applications:

  1. Scheduled Exterior Building Maintenance

Products:

  1. Fall Arrest and Restraint Anchors
  2. Vertical Lifeline System (HLL)

Surrey Biofuel Vent Stack, Surrey BC

Surrey Bio Fuel Vent Stack

Surrey Biofuel Vent Stack

9572 192nd St, Surrey, B.C

Under the Public-Private Partnership (P3) program jointly with the Government of Canada through its P3 Canada Fund, the Surrey’s biofuel processing facility is the first closed-loop fully-integrated organics waste management system in North America.

The facility is designed to receive and process 115,000 tonnes of organic waste annually, the largest of its kind in Canada with a capacity to process 100% of the City’s organic waste, along with commercial organic waste, helping Metro Vancouver achieve its regional 70% waste diversion target. The Surrey Bio Fuel vent stack is a 70m tall structure with fixed steel ladders ascending two thirds of the height

Atlas was initially engaged to facilitate vertical lifeline fall protection systems to safely allow workers to climb the stack.

An overhead self-retracting device was used for one of the ladders that required a walk through type ladder. The remaining three ladders received vertical lifelines attached directly to the ladder.

Atlas worked closely with the client to ensure that the ladders and structure were properly reinforced to withstand the loading associated with this specific fall protection system.

Later Atlas was again invited to install fall restraint anchors on the same building for the roof top maintenance. On its CLT roof, Atlas engineers designed a custom lag attachment that was used to mount the anchor on the top side without penetrating all the way through. This solution allowed for no visible hardware on the underside.Applications:

  1. Other Fall Protection and Protection Applications

Products:

  1. Vertical Lifeline Systems
  2. Special Industry Safety Products
